Pokémon GO Friend Limit 2026: 650 Friends + Full XP Table

Published on April 29, 2026 · 4 min read

Niantic raised the trainer level cap from 50 to 80 on October 15, 2025. To reach level 80 you now need 203,353,000 XP — over 15× more than what was needed to hit level 50 before the update. Without a friendship-XP-focused strategy, that path takes many years.

This guide uses official numbers from the 2025 update and the new Forever Friends level (launched December 2025) to show the fastest possible route using the social system.

Maximum Pokémon level is still 50. Only the trainer cap was raised to 80.

Friendship level XP table (updated 2025)

Niantic increased friendship rewards in the October 2025 update to incentivize the social system at the new level 80 cap:

Great Friend715,00030,000
Ultra Friend3075,000150,000

Total possible per friend up to Best Friends with Lucky Egg: 489,000 XP. Forever Friends adds extra XP every time you stack 90 friendship points.

Pokémon GO Friend Limit 2026: 650 Friends

Niantic has raised the friend limit twice since the feature launched. In 2026 the cap sits at 650 friends per account — up from 400 in 2024 and the original 200.

YearFriend LimitNote
2018–2023200Original cap (feature launched June 2018)
2024400Doubled by Niantic
2026650Incremental rollout in blocks of 50

The 2026 rollout to 650 is incremental — your account may still show 400 if it hasn't received the update yet. Check the Friends tab in-game to confirm your current limit.

Other limits that apply regardless of the friend cap:

  • Pending friend requests: max 100 at any time
  • Friend requests you can send per day: 100
  • Gifts you can open per day: 30
  • Gifts you can send per day: one per friend (no aggregate daily cap)

Forever Friends: the level above Best Friends

In December 2025, Niantic added Forever Friends — a sixth friendship level unlocked after Best Friends. To reach it you must accumulate 90 additional Friendship Points with each existing Best Friend.

  • You earn up to 1 point per day per friend through interactions (gift, trade, raid, battle)
  • Weekly Challenges with friends grant up to 7 extra points per week
  • Forever Friends is repeatable — every 90 points earns 1 Remote Trade
  • Lucky Friends carries over to Remote Trades — power up expensive Pokémon remotely

How many friends do you need for level 80?

Let's redo the math with the updated numbers. Reaching level 80 requires 203 million XP. If each friend yields ~489,000 XP through friendship up to Best Friends (with Lucky Egg), you'd need approximately 415 friends reaching Best Friends — and that only covers the friendship portion of total XP.

Realistic estimate: 300-500 Best Friends over 2-3 years, supplemented by raids, event catches, the Daily Adventure Egg (10,000 XP per hatch after walking 1km), and the special level 70-80 tasks (which have requirements beyond XP).

Strategy: Lucky Egg + mass evolution

Lucky Egg is still the main lever. To maximize with the new numbers:

  1. Stack 30+ friends about to hit Best Friends on the same day
  2. Activate the Lucky Egg
  3. Open one gift from each friend in sequence (each gift that levels friendship counts as 150k doubled XP)
  4. In 30 minutes: 30 evolutions × 300k XP = 9 million XP in a single session

Events that boost friendship XP

  • Friendship Weekend — 2x XP on all friendship actions
  • Pokémon GO Fest — Lucky Friends with doubled chance
  • Daily Adventure Egg — 10k XP per hatch (1km walked)
  • Doubled XP events — stack with Lucky Egg for 4x total

Lucky Friends: the shortcut that doubles trade value

The chance of becoming Lucky Friend is still ~1.1% per gift opened between Best Friends or Forever Friends. When activated, your next trade together turns the Pokémon into Lucky — guaranteed minimum 12/12/12 IVs and 50% off the Stardust cost to power up to level 50 (Pokémon cap).

Lucky Friend now carries over to Remote Trades (Forever Friends) — you can power up valuable Pokémon with friends worldwide without being physically near each other.

How to keep the daily flow without becoming a slave to the game

With the level 80 cap and the new Forever Friends level, the game is even more dependent on daily consistency. A missed day resets the Best Friends evolution timer and stalls progress toward Forever Friends.

Players who reach level 80 fastest typically automate the most boring part: using a service that adds new friends daily and freeing up their playtime for raids, key Pokémon catches, special events, and completing level 70-80 tasks (which have specific requirements beyond XP).

Conclusion

With the cap at 80 and Forever Friends added, reaching the top is an even longer marathon — but with 650 friend slots and friendship XP boosted by 50%, the strategy of maintaining a large active friend pool yields more XP than ever.
