Friendship XP is the single fastest source of experience in Pokémon GO in 2026 — and after the level 80 cap update raised the total XP required to 203,353,000, it's no longer optional if you want to keep leveling. This guide explains exactly which actions count, how much each one is worth, and how to stack them for the highest XP per minute the game allows.
All XP values in this guide come from the October 2025 friendship rewards update and reflect the post-level-80 economy as of 2026.
What counts as friendship XP
Niantic gates friendship leveling behind a single daily interaction per friend pair. That interaction can be any one of the following:
- Opening a gift the friend sent you
- Sending a gift that the friend opens that day
- Completing a trade with that friend (one trade per friend per day)
- Battling them in a Trainer Battle
- Battling alongside them in a raid (any tier)
- Battling alongside them against a Team GO Rocket leader
The first qualifying action each day flips the friendship clock forward one tick. Extra interactions still grant standard XP for the activity (raid XP, trade XP, etc.) but they don't accelerate the friendship level — you can't reach Best Friends in 45 days by doubling up.
The friendship XP table (2026)
These are the level-up bonuses you receive when a friendship transitions to the next tier. The Lucky Egg column shows the XP under an active Lucky Egg at the exact moment of the transition:
| Friendship Level | Days to Reach | Base XP | With Lucky Egg |
|---|---|---|---|
| Good Friend | 1 | 4,500 | 9,000 |
| Great Friend | 7 | 15,000 | 30,000 |
| Ultra Friend | 30 | 75,000 | 150,000 |
| Best Friends | 90 | 150,000 | 300,000 |
| Forever Friends | +90 points after Best | Variable | Variable |
Cumulative total per friend through Best Friends with Lucky Egg: 489,000 XP. Multiply by 30 stacked Best Friends transitions and a single Lucky Egg window is worth up to 9 million XP.
How to earn friendship XP every day
1. Open 30 gifts (most efficient daily action)
The hard cap is 30 gifts opened per day. Each open ticks one friend forward on their level clock and grants small XP/stardust/items in the moment. This is the highest-throughput friendship action because it requires no coordination — you just need friends who actively send.
2. Send 30 gifts to fill the other side
You can also send up to 30 gifts per day. Sending only counts toward friendship leveling when the recipient opens the gift, so prioritize sending to active players (filter by last interaction in your friend list). Inactive friends consume one of your 30 daily sends without producing the friendship tick.
3. Trade as the daily interaction backup
If a friend hasn't sent or received gifts in a few days, a trade is the cheapest interaction to keep the level clock moving. Special trades cost less stardust at higher friendship levels (Best Friends only need 800 stardust for a special trade vs. 20,000 at Good Friend), so trading actually gets cheaper as the friendship matures.
4. Raid together for double benefit
Raiding with a friend counts as both the daily interaction AND grants a friendship-level damage bonus to your Pokémon (3% at Good, 7% Great, 10% Ultra, 15% Best Friends). If you're already raiding, doing it with friends is free friendship XP on top.

See pricing →The Lucky Egg stack — 9M XP in 30 minutes
The most efficient friendship XP strategy in the entire game is the Best Friends stack: coordinate 30 friendships to all hit Best Friend on the same day, then activate a Lucky Egg right before opening their gifts. Every transition during that 30-minute window doubles to 300,000 XP.
Here's how the math works at the upper bound — 30 simultaneous Best Friends transitions with one Lucky Egg:
| Count | Base XP/transition | With Lucky Egg | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Best Friends transition | 150,000 | 300,000 | 300,000 |
| 10 stacked | 1,500,000 | 3,000,000 | 3,000,000 |
| 30 stacked (cap) | 4,500,000 | 9,000,000 | 9,000,000 |
You can only open 30 gifts in one day — so the cap of the stack is 30 simultaneous Best Friends transitions. Trying to open the 31st gift fails silently and the friendship doesn't level up that day.
How to build the stack
- On day 0, add 30+ new friends from a code exchange community or service
- Open and send a gift to each on the same day — this starts all clocks together
- Repeat the daily interaction for each of the next 89 days (a calendar reminder is essential — missing 1 day pushes the Best Friends transition by 1 day for everyone you missed)
- On day 90, do NOT open any gifts. Activate a Lucky Egg in the morning
- Open all 30 stacked gifts back-to-back inside the 30-minute Lucky Egg window
Friendship XP per hour vs other XP sources
To put friendship XP in context, here's how the maxed Lucky Egg stack compares to other high-XP activities in 2026:
| Activity | XP per 30 min | Lucky Egg required |
|---|---|---|
| Catching 100 evolutions chained | ~1,000,000 | Yes |
| 20 raids back-to-back | ~600,000 | Optional |
| Mass Pokémon evolution (100 Magikarp at once) | ~1,000,000 | Yes |
| 30 Best Friends stack (this guide) | 9,000,000 | Yes |
The friendship stack is roughly 9× the next-best Lucky Egg activity. The only constraint is the 90-day setup — once you have a routine of staggered stacks (one per month), you're earning 9M XP every 30 days from this method alone.
Common mistakes that cost friendship XP
- Missing a single daily interaction — friendship clocks don't accumulate, so a skipped day extends the level by 24 hours
- Opening Best Friend gifts before activating the Lucky Egg — once opened, the transition fires immediately and you lose the 2× multiplier
- Stacking with inactive friends — if even 1 of your 30 stack candidates doesn't open their gift on day 90, you wasted a 90-day setup slot
- Hitting the 100 pending friend request cap by sending too many at once — slows down filling the 650 cap
- Forgetting that the daily interaction is 1 per friend — opening 5 gifts from the same friend in one day still only counts as 1 tick
Filling 650 friends for sustained XP
With the 2026 cap at 650 friends, you can run continuous Lucky Egg stacks indefinitely. The math: 650 friends ÷ 30 simultaneous transitions = 21 possible stacks across a 90-day cycle. That's roughly 2 stacks per month after the initial 90-day build, or ~18M XP per month from friendship alone — enough to keep climbing toward level 80 without grinding evolutions.
The hardest part is finding 650 active players. Reddit and Discord exchange threads provide irregular bursts. Automated trainer code exchange services post your code to multiple community sites daily, which produces a more reliable inbound request flow.
Quick reference checklist
- Open 30 gifts every day — non-negotiable
- Send 30 gifts to active friends every day
- Trade when a friend hasn't gifted in 3+ days
- Track Best Friends candidates in a calendar — coordinate transition days
- Save 1 Lucky Egg per 30-friend stack
- Open stacked gifts within the first 25 minutes of the Lucky Egg (leave 5 minutes margin)
- Refill empty slots with new exchange codes to keep approaching the 650 cap
